Despite the limited space available in this 2002 tract home in San Elijo Hills, we thrilled our clients by tucking a custom wine cellar under the stairway. By transforming the typical L-shaped storage closet beneath the main floor stairway, we created an enchanting, functional wine cellar that holds more than 500 bottles and even includes refrigeration.
We started by gutting the closet door and shelving, and removing the framing to create a thickened arch entryway into the space. Green board, installed over plastic, was covered in an inch of mortar and stone to create an earthy ambiance.
We customized the wine racks to fit the angled ceiling, adding charm to the space and making wine-hunting fun. Earthy tiles, rustic cellar lights and an 8-foot iron patina gate add to the ambiance.
